Building a remote team

CLIENT NEED: Philip Morris Latvia wanted to organize a team building event. However, epidemiological restrictions were in place in the country and participants could not meet in person.

WIN PARTNERS SOLUTION: WIN partners offered to adapt the team building program to the online format and organize the event virtually.

RESULT: 27 Philip Morris Latvia employees participated in the virtual team building. The most important benefits were the opportunity to get to know colleagues in an informal atmosphere, to understand the importance of common values when working together and to feel the emotional bind created by the opportunity to spend qualitive time with colleagues, even remotely.

Which business problem Philip Morris wanted to solve?

In order to ensure the ongoing performance of the company during the pandemic, in 2020 the Philip Morris Latvia team started working remotely. It was a new experience for both the manager and the team. During the year,  new colleagues joined the company and they needed to be trained and integrated into the team. For developing the team, the company’s management wanted to organize an event that would increase the trust among colleagues, emotionally support, and encourage the team in a situation when it is not possible for everyone to get together for several months.

What was a solution WIN partners offered and implemented?

WIN partners in cooperation with the client developed a program for a virtual team-building event. WIN partners have previously implemented team-building projects, but this time it was the first experience of such activity online. This required adapting the content of the existing program to the online format.

Before the event, each participant – there were 27 in total – had to do homework in order to get to know one of the teammates. The team building event was held in two sessions – on November 23 and 30, 2020. Between meetings, participants had to do group work.

Through practical tasks, participants got to know new colleagues, strengthened mutual trust, and learned how to communicate openly and not lose focus when working out of the office. The participants also agreed on concrete steps to improve team cohesion while working online.

How did Philip Morris evaluate the training result?

Jurgis Petris (Country Manager Latvia): “This event gave us to have a different experience, helped to get to know colleagues, and think about issues that we don’t get to talk about so often on a daily basis. Special thanks to the trainer who excelled in both days of training and inspired the team to think about activities that can unite and help create trustworthy relationships with colleagues. Thank you very much and I think we will definitely repeat this activity in a year. “
